Heading back to school in a few weeks? We still have our big beach vacation right before school starts, so at least we have that to look forward to. However, school does start back up in a month. Whaaaaaaaa. I can’t believe I am going to have a kindergartner in just a few weeks! In preparation of my kiddo starting school, I made a first day of school sign. Read on to see how to do it and where to get the tools to make it.
The first day of school is an exciting time (for kids and parents!). I love scrolling through Instagram and Facebook the first day of school and see all of my friends’ kiddos pictures. Have you seen those “First Day of School” signs? Just about all of my friends have one. Some are just a printed piece of paper and some are a little more elaborate on a chalk board. I made this first day of school sign and so can you!

Back to School Transfer
How to Create a First Day of School Sign:
If this is your first time using Chalk Couture, make sure to check out this page with all of my tutorials. I have tons of videos on my YouTube Channel too! Start by cutting out the pieces from the transfer that you will use. Next, fuzz your transfer pieces. Start with the top of the chalk board and apply the flags. Allow the flags to completely dry (usually about 10-15 minutes) and then apply the “First Day of” banner. This transfer takes a bit longer to dry because there is so much chalk paste used for this particular transfer. Make sure the paste dries completely before applying the grade. The transfer will overlap the paste a bit and if the paste is still a bit wet, the transfer will pick up the paste you have already applied and you will need to start all over. Work your way down the board using the different transfer pieces. The owl has multiple parts, so each layer needs to dry before adding the next layer. Want to see how layering works? Check out this video.
Once all of the paste is dry, you are ready to show off the sign (and your child of course) on the first day of school!!!
I also did the back of the sign which says “Last Day of”. Chalk Couture does not make a transfer (yet) for the last day of school, so I used my Cricut Explore Air 2 and some stencil vinyl to create the words. I used the chalk paste with a small foam stencil brush and then removed the stencil vinyl.
