Happy Summer! I’m so glad the weather is warmer and the days are longer. I absolutely love summer. One of the reasons I love summer is because my favorite holiday, the 4th of July occurs in the summer! I’m a very patriotic person. When I was in college, I had a red, white and blue room. I always wanted a red, white and blue wedding (I didn’t-we had a destination beach wedding😊). But I seriously love patriotic décor. Seeing those colors of the American flag just make me happy. Today I am going to share how to make this patriotic American flag sign.
There’s a story behind this project. We have American flags outside of our house in our garden. We put them out before Memorial Day and usually they just flap in the wind until the end of the summer when I pack them up and store them for next year. A couple of weeks ago, one of the dogs got a hold of one of the flags and chewed a couple of holes in the corner of the flag. I didn’t want to throw the flag away, so I decided to use it to make an American flag sign.
What you need
American Flag
Scrap Wood
Mod Podge
Foam Brush
Thin paint brush
Chalk Paint
Paint Brush
Cricut and Adhesive Vinyl (or letter stickers)
Sand Paper
Twine
Hot glue/Hot glue gun
How to make an American Flag Sign
First, cut your scrap wood to match the size of the flag. Using the foam brush, cover the board with a layer of Mod Podge and place your flag on top.
Allow for the Mod Podge to dry and add a coat of Mod Podge to the top of the flag.
Using your Cricut, cut out the vinyl letters. Next, place the letters on the flag. Because the flag is fabric, and I didn’t want the paint to run underneath the letters, so I also added Mod Podge to the edges of the letters using a thin paint brush.
Allow the Mod Podge to dry, and then paint over the entire thing with chalk paint.
Once the paint is dry, carefully peel off the vinyl letters. At this point, I decided to sand down the paint a bit to give it a rustic look.
To frame the sign, hot glue twine along the edge of the sign. This particular sign has three layers of twine. Only use a small amount of hot glue to get a clean look, you don’t want glue sticking out around the twine.
Finally, add two lines of hot glue to the back of the sign and glue twine to the back to hang the sign on your door.
This flag sign was a great way to repurpose a damaged American flag and turn it into a beautiful, welcoming sign. I have this on our back door right now which is the door we use most often. It is such a nice reminder that we are “home” and this country is HOME!
I hope you like this patriotic, DIY American flag sign. Please share if you do!
