We love bacon in our house. My youngest son will eat a side of bacon for a meal. Although bacon has been on breakfast menus forever, it is becoming a trend to see bacon on dinner menus in the form of appetizers. Recently, we went out to eat with my parents and had bacon skewers for a starter. They were good, but of course, my mom said she could kick it up a notch! My mom is an amazing cook who’s philosophy is: A recipe is just a suggestion. She is very innovative and creative in the kitchen and came up with these amazing candied bacon skewers!
What you need *
1lb thick cut bacon
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tbs red pepper flakes
3 tbs cup chopped roasted pecans
*Other than the bacon, all measurements are approximate. Use more or less to taste.
Candied Bacon Skewers: 2 Flavors
First, thread thick cut bacon on bamboo skewers. Lay the bacon flat on a foil lined cookie sheet. Sprinkle the bacon with brown sugar.
Sweet and Spicy
Sprinkle on some red pepper flakes
Bake in a preheated 400 degree oven for 20 – 30 minutes until they are brown and crispy. Watch them carefully so the sugar doesn’t burn. Place on paper towels to cool and serve at room temperature.
Pecan Glazed
Sprinkle on some chopped roasted pecans
Bake in a preheated 400 degree oven for 20 – 30 minutes until they are brown and crispy. Watch them carefully so the sugar doesn’t burn. Place on paper towels to cool and serve at room temperature.
Since these are on skewers, they are the perfect holiday party food. No plate needed! Trust me- these will go quickly. Customize these to add whatever flavors you’d like. After all, a recipe is just a suggestion!
