I am so excited to share this DIY sign with you today! When I saw this transfer in the Chalk Couture catalog, I knew I had to have it! Read on to see how I made this DIY sugar skull sign.
Have you seen the Disney movie, Coco? It is great…like really, really great. My boys LOVE it and so do we (I even cried at the end)! One of the reasons we love it is that it teaches an important part of a different culture that my boys were not previously exposed to. Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is all about remembering loved ones who have passed on. The movie does a beautiful job at explaining the importance of family and the rituals of the holiday.

The movie also takes place in the after-life, so all the characters have sugar skulls as faces. My husband has a bit of obsession with sugar skulls. He loves the cultural aspect- remembering and honoring loved ones, but he also loves the bright colors and decorations. If you have ever been to El Mercado in San Antonio, you will see tons of tiles, decor, sinks, mirrors and dishes with sugar skulls on them.
I also love all the bright, vibrant colors and the idea that the day after Halloween is a day for celebrating, honoring and remembering our family members who have passed on.
You can buy the sugar skull transfer here.
I used four chalk paste colors to create this-white, couture teal, couture coral, and yellow.
Make sure each layer is completely dry before adding the next layer and make sure you line the transfer evenly on top of each later. Check out this quick video to show you how to do it!
Creating a sugar skull would normally be a difficult task, but Chalk Couture makes it super simple with this layered transfer. I love that you can completely customize this transfer by using any combination of colors. Because the Chalk Paste is removable, you can also use this transfer on a variety of surfaces like wood, glass, metal and of course chalkboards.
