Hey Friends! It is library week, so today I’m sharing a list of library resources you probably didn’t know exist at your local library. Libraries offer so much more than books. Did you know you can check out DVD’s at your local library? Most libraries have new releases just like Netflix. In addition to checking out book and movies, here is a list of 10 resources you didn’t know exist at your local library.
10 Resources You Didn’t Know Exist at Your Library
Apply for a Passport
No need to go to a federal building and stand in a long line. Check with your local library. Most now offer passport application services.
Check Out Rubber Stamps and Ink Pads
Make custom Thank You or Birthday Cards. Create gift tags or decorate a package. Ask your local library if they have rubber stamps and ink. Generally you can’t take them home, but bring some card stock with you and use the stamps and ink for free!
Use of 3D Printer
My kids made a keychain with the 3D printer at my mother-in-law’s library. 3D printers are so cool. Even if you aren’t making something, it is pretty cool to watch!
Check Out Knitting Needles
Yup, you can check out knitting needles at the library! Great for people who want to learn but don’t want to invest in knitting needles.
Access to Virtual Reality System
Check with your local library about virtual reality systems. Our local library has virtual reality systems available for certain programs and school visits.
One-on-One Computer Instruction
Want to learn how to use a particular computer program. Ask your local library if they offer one-on-one instruction. This is FREE!
eBooks, eMagazines and Downloadable Audio Books
There are a variety of services for eBooks, eMagazines and audio books at your local library (Hoopla, Zinio, Overdrive). Just ask- some of these services, you don’t even need to leave your house. Just go online and enter your library card number.
Assortment of Programs
Take classes like cooking or intro to 3D Printing. There’s also paint night and medicare information night at some libraries.
Access to Databases
Free access to databases for Geneology, Home Improvement & DIY, and even a Car Repair database with step-by-step instruction and wonderful diagrams.
Rosetta Stone Access
You’ve seen those commercials for Rosetta Stone. The package of audio books and workbooks is expensive. Now you can assess Rosetta Stone at your local library. How cool would it be to learn a new language for free!
I was so surprised some of these resources existed when I first learned about them. Of course, you can still take little ones to the library for story time and puppet shows! Check out your local library’s website for special events. If you have kids, make sure to sign up for the summer reading program at your local library too!
