Do you know how much I love going to auctions? I do…I really do. They are fun, exciting and I always find treasures that I couldn’t find at a local thrift store. I wrote an ebook all about attending auctions. Grab a copy here. Today I want to show you this round dining table I got at an online auction for $22. Yup, twenty two dollars. I will show you how I revived this table and turned it into a farmhouse kitchen table.
This particular round dining table was purchased from an online auction. The drawback to bidding online, is that you can’t see the item in person. I totally took a chance on this table based off of this picture!
When I pulled up to haul this table home, I had already thought ahead and brought my drill with the intention to remove the pedestal and lay the tabletop flat in the bed of the truck. Welp, that didn’t work. The underneath of the table has a pulley system because this round dining table also came with five leafs! Driving home with this table strapped into the back of the truck was one of the scariest drives ever!

So this table sat in storage for almost a year. I bought it after we had gone under contract on our new house, but then we moved everything into storage while our house was built. 10 months after I purchased this, I finally got to clean it up and prepare it for becoming our kitchen table.
How To Restore and Round Dining Table
First, I cleaned this massive table. I pulled it open and scrubbed every nook and cranny with soap and water. Since we were living with my in-law’s at the time, I was able to use the compressed air hose in my father-in-law’s garage to ensure I got all the dust, dirt and grime off of this table.Next, I started sanding. I sanded off the exiting finish on the tabletop.I knew I didn’t want to paint the top of the table. The look of a painted pedestal and natural or stained wood top is very popular right now in farmhouse decor, so I definitely wanted to go with that style.
For the top of the table, I used Wise Owl Lemon Verbena Salve. This stuff is amazing!! I also restored this marble-top antique dresser with it.
The pedestal is painted with Annie Sloan Pure White Chalk Paint and distressed with sandpaper.
Because this dining table would be our every-day table, I wanted to add extra protection. I used Miniwax Polycrylic as a top coat on the table (both the table top and pedestal).
I love love love having a round pedestal dining table in our kitchen. It fits absolutely perfectly! Seems to me, round kitchen tables are making a huge comeback and have been super popular in recent years.
Our kitchen has an open floor plan. We have a huge kitchen island where we feed the boys breakfast, but try to sit at the kitchen table for dinner and whenever we have company. Because this round table has five leafs, we can also expand it, which is nice.
