So now let’s get into the “Why”.
Water
You will need water to clean your transfers. A little cold water and Chalk Couture board erasers work great to clean transfers. If your paste is dry, you can add a little water to thin it out and bring it back to its original consistency. Keep in mind, if you live in the country, like me, don’t use well water. Use distilled water if your tap water has heavy minerals. Chalk Couture has an excellent fine-mist spray bottle that is GREAT for spritzing water into your chalk paste or cleaning your boards. Grab it here.
Disinfectant Wipes
Disinfectant wipes are a must-have. Once you wash your transfer with cold water, you need to wipe both sides of the transfer with a disinfectant wipe. This also helps with removing any lint or fuzz and prevents water from pooling on the sticky side of the transfer when it is drying.
Check out this video to see how to clean your transfer!
Stir Sticks
These stir sticks are the best! You need to stir your chalk paste every time you use it, so you need something to stir with. I have tried wooden craft sticks, but have found that sometimes they have little splinters that get in the jar of paste and they are impossible to clean and reuse. I have also used plastic knives, but the paste sticks in the groves of the knife and it seemed like I was wasting a lot of paste. These particular stir sticks don’t have groves and wash easily, so they are reusable!
Towel
You need to have a towel for fuzzing. I find that bath towels work well, but Chalk Couture just started selling their fuzzing towel! Don’t know what fuzzing is? Watch this video!
Board Erasers
Chalk Couture Board Erasers are perfect for cleaning off your board and starting a new project. Simply get them wet, and wipe your board. The Chalk paste is easily removed with the board erasers. They are also great to get ink and paste off of transfers!
Wax
You need to wax some surfaces before chalking on them. For instance, you must wax wooden surfaces. Want to know more about prepping wooden surfaces for Chalk Couture? CLICK HERE. Waxing is simple and easy, but keep in mind, you do need to let the wax cure for 24 hours before chalking on the surface. Just apply the wax with a clean towel and then wipe the excess off. Buff with the towel to make sure there are not any clumps and that’s it! Waxing is important for two reasons. First, you need to protect your transfer, and second, you want to make sure your chalk paste sticks. Chalk Couture sells a wax at SUPER affordable price! Get it here.
Sharpie
Have a sharpie on hand so you can label the backs of the transfers. The transfers are reusable and you will want to re-apply them to the paper backing they came on. Write what the transfer is on the back side of the backing paper. This way, when you are working with multiple transfers, you will not get them mixed up with which backing fits with which transfer.
Scissors
Chalk Couture sells transfers with multiple pieces on one transfer sheet. The pieces are separated by a thin white line. Cut along the line to separate the pieces to work with. The Chalk Couture transfer trimmers work GREAT to cut the transfers apart.
Polycrylic
Polycrylic is my secret to reusing wooden boards. If you properly treat wooden boards, they are reusable. Meaning, you can wipe your chalk paste right off and chalk again! To learn all about using polycrylic, check this post out. Watch the video below to see how easy it is to wipe off Chalk Paste on a properly prepped wooden board!
Spray Sealer
If you want to make a chalk project permanent, you can easily do that by sealing it with a spray sealer. Just follow the directions on the can and viola!
